About the test

This test is designed to allow you to apply a standardized prompt to any platform.

One difficulty with AI is the variation between platforms and even within individual responses on the same platform, as AI evolves so rapidly. This standardized test provides a controlled input to allow comparison of different outputs.

To use the test, select which stage of the writing process you want to explore. Then, the prompts are designed to be copied and pasted into the different AI platforms.

There are two ways to use the prompts. There is one prompt where you can go through all nine writing process steps, with prompts building off of one another. These are labeled inputs #1 - 9. Or, you can use the alternative prompts to see the writing process steps one at a time. â€‹â€‹

Once the response is generated, analyze it for the factors you care about for your writing process. This could include;

1. Does the AI show me where it is gathering information from?

2. Do I like the format or the interface of the output?

3. Am I able to manipulate the prompts to get the outputs I want?

4. Is it helpful for my process?

Compare these factors across different platforms.

1. Do you like one platform more than the other?

2. Is one platform more helpful for your process?

3. Does one platform produce outputs that fit with my writing process?

Considering questions like these when exploring AI, paired with an informed understanding of the ethical considerations of each platform, will help you begin to critically consume and understand how AI may be implemented in your writing process.

Examples of AI Platforms

These steps of the writing process were determined by Montana State University Writing Tutors in their own exploration of AI. We decided on multiple different functions of writing that could be aided with AI, but it is no means an extensive or exhaustive list.
